When I was little I absolutely loved Barbie dolls. According to my dad I used to ask for new barbie dolls or things for them for every birthday and Christmas. He and mum often obliged despite my dad ushering me to the ‘boy’s toys’ aisle in shops to try and get me interested in the toy cars. I remember one year I really, really wanted the Sparkle Eyes Barbie for Christmas and must have been really persistant about it and my parents told me absolutely positively ‘no’ so I was totally over the moon with excitement to unwrap none other than that Barbie doll! Bee told me later that they only said no to stop me asking and that they were planning on giving me her all along!
I actually did a research project at high school on Barbie, looking at whether or not she was a positive or negative influence on girls. I concluded that while her body shape may give some girls the wrong idea about what they look like, she was also a positive role model because of her careers as a dentist, astronaut, doctor and vet among about a hundred other professions.
